CardVault by Tom Brady in 60 seconds
| Origin | Conceived in 2020 by Chris Costa and Randy Greenstein. First store opened at Gillette Stadium in Oct 2021. |
| Brady | 50% owner and brand ambassador. Costa runs retail operations. Other co-owners: Ed Kane, Tim Bonito, Scott Heigelmann. (Sources disagree on 2024 vs. Feb 2025 for when Brady joined, so don't name a year.) |
| Size | About 19 stores as of Oct 2026 (Indianapolis was #19, opened Sep 27). Goals: 40 by 2028, eventually 100. Check the count again before the interview. |
| Bay Area | SF flagship across from Oracle Park: #12, opened Feb 7, 2026, about 2,800 sq ft, the largest store. Palo Alto, Town & Country Village: #17, opened Aug 15, 2026. |
| Model | Buy, sell, trade, grade. Authorized PSA, Beckett, and SGC dealer. Carries Topps, Panini, Upper Deck, Pokémon, and Fanatics Authentic. The shop site also lists One Piece. Memorabilia vault, trade nights, CardVault Breaks (livestream). |

STAR
| Part | Share | Say |
|---|---|---|
| Situation | ~20% | When, where, what went wrong. One or two sentences. |
| Task | ~10% | What you owned. |
| Action | ~60% | Specific steps, told with "I," not "we." |
| Result | ~10% | A number or concrete outcome, plus what you'd repeat. |
Keep it to 1.5–2 minutes. Rehearse the key points, not a script. Have stories ready for: covering a no-show, an upset person, delegating under time pressure, catching a mistake, and training someone.
The experience-gap answer
Own it ("I haven't held a key-holder title") → Map it (owned processes end to end, trained people, accountable when things broke, reported numbers, plus one STAR story) → Close it (studied opening and closing, drawer reconciliation, KPIs, comps, grading). Never inflate. "Not professionally. Here's the process I'd follow" beats a bluff.
Operational questions: the formula
Stay safe → follow store policy → communicate early (manager, team, customer) → document. Expect questions on open and close steps, a broken alarm, opening late, an upset customer, a no-show, delegating before close, motivating staff when it's slow, and POS.
Card-knowledge probes
| Question | Answer core |
|---|---|
| Why $8 vs. $400? | Player, rookie status, scarcity, condition |
| Who makes NFL/NBA cards? | Topps (owned by Fanatics). NFL exclusive since Apr 2026 (Panini held it 2016–2026). NBA also moved from Panini to Topps. |
| What's it worth? | Recent sold comps, same grade (130point, Card Ladder) |
| Should I grade it? | Centering, corners, edges, surface, then compare cost to the price jump between grades |
| Buy counter? | ID → condition → comps → offer below comps for margin → explain the number kindly |
| Pokémon or One Piece? | Character, the exact printing (rarity symbol or Super Alt-Art vs. alt-art), English vs. Japanese comps. The box does not promise the chase. Lesson 8. |
Questions to ask them
- What does a typical opening-to-close shift look like for a Key Holder?
- Which KPIs matter most in this role?
- Who makes buy-counter offers, and what needs manager approval?
- With 40 stores targeted by 2028, what's the growth path from Key Holder?
- How is training done? Is there shadowing on grading submissions?
