Who holds the license
| League | Licensed maker | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MLB | Topps (Fanatics) | Topps held MLB exclusively from about 2010. Fanatics' MLBPA deal began in 2023 and its league deal in 2026. Bowman = prospects. |
| NBA | Topps (Fanatics) | NBA + NBPA exclusive, announced Oct 15, 2025. The first set was 2025-26 Topps Basketball (Oct 23, 2025). |
| NFL | Topps (Fanatics) | NFL + NFLPA exclusive, announced Apr 2, 2026. Releases so far: 2025 Topps Chrome Football (Apr 15) and 2026 Topps Flagship Football (Aug 21). |
| NHL | Upper Deck | Series 1/2 (flagship), SP Authentic (high-end), The Cup (ultra-premium). |
| WNBA | Panini | Panini renewed this exclusive in Nov 2025. |
Panini in 2026
| Status | Unlicensed for the NBA (since Oct 2025) and the NFL (since spring 2026). No team logos, nicknames, helmets, or uniform trade dress. |
| Products | 2025-26 Prizm Basketball (Jul 31, 2026; 3 autos per hobby box; HOFers, NIL college players, pros on individual deals). 2026 Donruss Football (no NFL logos, a first for the brand). Prizm Draft Picks uses college/NIL rights. |
| Players | Panini relies on individual player contracts. Sources conflict on whether it holds any NFLPA group rights: the NFLPA moved its exclusive to Fanatics in 2023, and Panini disputed that in arbitration. |
| Value | Unlicensed cards are generally discounted. Guides cite ~40–60%, but call it directional. Older licensed Prizm (2024 and earlier) is a separate market. |
| Lawsuit | Panini sued Fanatics for antitrust violations in 2023, and Fanatics countersued. In Aug 2026 Panini amended its complaint, alleging Fanatics used Panini's confidential license info. The case is in discovery, with trial likely in 2027 and settlement possible. |
Tier ladder (Topps)
| Tier | ~Hobby box | Examples | For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flagship | $25–100+ | Series 1, Series 2, Update (MLB, a ~700-card set); Flagship Football; Topps Basketball | Kids, set builders, team collectors |
| Chrome / mid | $100–400 | Topps Chrome, Bowman, Bowman Chrome, Heritage, Stadium Club, Allen & Ginter | Parallel chasers, rookie and prospect hunters |
| High-end | $300–1,000 | Tier One, Museum Collection | Hit chasers who are OK with few cards |
| Ultra-premium | $800–5,000+ | Dynasty | Big-budget patch-auto chasers |
The bands are rough (from a single guide), and boxes often trade above list. Real examples: 2026 Topps Series 1 hobby ran ~$190–205 at retailers, and 2025 Topps Chrome Football hobby ~$600 (it launched with the NFL license).
Formats
| Format | Typical ask | Hits |
|---|---|---|
| Hanger | ~$15–25 | None promised; format-exclusive parallels |
| Blaster / Value box | ~$25–45 | Autos possible, not promised; retail-only parallels |
| Mega | ~$75–85 | Not promised; exclusive parallels |
| Hobby | Product-dependent | Stated on the box (e.g. Flagship: 1 auto or relic; Bowman: ~1 auto; Bowman Chrome: ~2 autos) |
| Jumbo (hobby) | More than hobby | More hits (e.g. 2026 Bowman jumbo ~3 autos) |
Read the configuration line: "auto or relic" is not "auto," and "on average" is not "guaranteed." Pack and card counts change every release.
Rookie vs. 1st Bowman
| RC (shield logo) | Issued after the player's major-league debut. |
| 1st Bowman | The player's first Bowman card, marked "1st" (upper left). Often years before the debut. Not an RC. The logo appeared in 1996 and became standard in 2003 (sources differ). |
Counter script
1. "What's your budget?" → format. 2. "What are you hoping to pull?" → tier and brand.
| Kid, ~$30 | Flagship hanger or value box |
| Wants shiny parallels | Topps Chrome blaster or mega |
| Wants a guaranteed auto | Chrome or Bowman Chrome hobby |
| Prospect hunter (MLB) | Bowman / Bowman Chrome hobby (1st Bowman autos) |
| Wants one specific card | Sell the single |
| Fan of a team's look | Licensed Topps over unlicensed Panini; explain the logo difference |
Pokémon and One Piece
Same two questions, different shelf. Budget picks the format. "Play," "open something," or "this one card" picks the product. Full version: Pokémon and One Piece cheat sheet and Lesson 8.
